The Evolutionary Void

I am reviewing the novel The Evolutionary Void by Peter F Hamilton which is an excellent science fiction novel which I bought from kindle. This book concludes the Void trilogy and is probably the best of the 3 books. Hamilton does a kind of intelligent space opera which has established him as the number 1 science fiction author in Britain and I think his writing is very commercial. The plot to this book and it might be worth looking at the previous 2 posts to refresh your memory is the Commonwealth has built a super ship to deal with the Void problem. It’s capable of travelling at 59 light years an hour & is 200 metres wide & 600 metres long. It has weapons that have been tested at some remote location so at not to tip off the Raiel who are the baddies. It has all the latest technology they could muster together. Earth, obviously the headquarters of the Commonwealth becomes taken over by the Void & there are wholesale evacuations throughout the Milky Way. The growth of the Void is getting from bad to worse. They do have a problem with the evacuations in that those near to the wormholes are easy to evacuate but those further away must travel there which makes difficult. There is a happy ending and I though there was a nice touch to the story in that when they get rid of the Void at the centre of the Milky Way a single star is left at the centre. If you know much about astronomy you will know it’s thought there is a black hole at the centre of the galaxy which gives the galaxy its spiral shape. This book basically takes that idea and plays with it a little bit.
